Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2013, Volume 7, Issue 1,   Pages 83-88 doi: 10.1007/s11709-012-0148-8

Abstract: Unbound granular materials (UGMs) are widely used as a base or a subbase in pavement construction.are generally well graded and exhibit a higher peak strength than that of conventional cohesionless granularBy using a simplified version of granular solid hydrodynamics (GSH), a set of GSH material constantsThe results indicate that the GSH theory is able to describe such a special type of granular materials

Alluvial channel hydrodynamics around tandem piers with downward seepage

Rutuja CHAVAN, Wenxin HUAI, Bimlesh KUMAR

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2020, Volume 14, Issue 6,   Pages 1445-1461 doi: 10.1007/s11709-020-0648-x

Abstract: In this paper, we report the turbulent flow structures and the scour geometry around two piers with different diameters. An experiment was conducted on a non-uniform sand bed with two types of tandem arrangements, namely, pier (T1) with a 75 mm front and 90 mm rear, and pier (T2) with a 90 mm front and 75 mm rear, with and without-seepage flows, respectively. A strong wake region was observed behind the piers, but the vortex strength diminished with downward seepage. Streamwise velocity was found to be maximum near the bed downstream of the piers and at the edge of the scour hole upstream of the piers. Quadrant analysis was used to recognize the susceptible region for sediment entrainment and deposition. Upstream of the piers near the bed, the moments, turbulent kinetic energy (TKE), and TKE fluxes were found to decrease with downward seepage, in contrast to those in a plane mobile bed without piers. The reduction percentages of scour depth at the rear pier compared with the front one were approximately 40% for T1 and 60% for T2. Downward seepage also resulted in restrained growth of scouring with time.

Qicheng SUN, Feng JIN, Guohua ZHANG

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2013, Volume 7, Issue 1,   Pages 1-12 doi: 10.1007/s11709-013-0184-z

Abstract: A granular material is a conglomeration of discrete solid particles. However, for granular flows and solid-like states, the theory is still poorly understood because of theThe current theory is that the mesoscale characteristics define the key differences between granularmaterials and homogeneous solid materials.A multiscale framework is then proposed for dense granular materials.

Abstract: Granular matter possesses impact-absorbing property due to its energy dissipation character. To investigate the impact-absorbing capacity of granular matter, the discrete element method (DEM) isadopted to simulate the impact of a spherical projectile on to a granular bed.The dynamic responses of the projectile are obtained for both thin and thick granular bed.Determining a suitable bed thickness is crucial to the buffering effect of granular matter.
